What's the Difference Between Live In Person Fingerprint Impression Jewellery, and Engraved Fingerprint Jewelry made from a Digital Print?

What's the Difference Between Live In Person Fingerprint Impression Jewellery, and Engraved Fingerprint Jewelry made from a Digital Print?

Live, In Person, Cast Fingerprint Jewellery, vs. Fingerprint Jewellery made from a Digital Print

Live, in-person fingerprint jewellery is made by you, in-person, from a kit we send you and is then that exact piece is cast into the metal of your choice.

Digital fingerprint jewellery is engraved from an image you send to us.

A digital image is an image of a fingerprint that can be emailed. It can be a .jpeg, a .pdf, or a .png

One of the most common questions we receive is why some fingerprint jewelry appears deeply detailed, while other pieces have a softer, more natural impression.

The answer lies in how the jewelry is created.

Live, In Person Fingerprint Jewellery

Our Live fingerprint jewelry begins with an actual fingerprint impression made by your loved one.

Rather than creating an engraving from a photograph, we cast the physical impression itself. The finished pendant is created directly from the piece that was touched and pressed by the individual whose fingerprint it carries.

This process captures two things:

  • The fingerprint details that were transferred into the impression material
  • The physical shape and contour created by the finger pressing into the surface

Because the jewelry is cast from the original impression, every piece is unique.

The clarity of the fingerprint depends entirely on the impression that was made. Some fingerprints naturally produce deeper, more defined ridges, while others create softer patterns. Fingerprints vary from person to person, and factors such as skin texture, pressure, age, and how it is packaged during travel can affect the final result.

During production, we carefully shape and finish only the back and edges by hand, while preserving as much of the original fingerprint detail as possible. We do not alter, redraw, or artificially enhance the fingerprint itself.

Many families appreciate this process because the finished piece is a direct physical connection to something their loved one actually touched.

Digital, Engraved Fingerprint Jewellery

Engraved fingerprint jewelry is created from a digital image of a fingerprint.

A photograph, scan, or digital fingerprint file is converted into an engraving design and then engraved into the metal.

This method offers more artistic control over the appearance of the fingerprint.

We can:

  • Add it to any shape pendant
  • Increase contrast and depth of lines
  • Adjust line thickness
  • Refine and clean the image
  • Create a texture you can feel

Because the fingerprint is digitally prepared before engraving, the final result often appears sharper and more defined.

We can then engrave your fingerprint image onto any of our pieces. Some are clean modern shapes like discs and rectangles, while our most popular designs are more organic looking. These are carved from wax and designed to look more like a live impression with natural shapes. People choose these as the organic style fingerprints look closest to a fingerprint impression, but with the advantage of using a fingerprint image.

Often when a loved one has passed, we can still create a more natural looking piece with only a digital image.

Which Method Is Better?

Neither method is better, they simply create different types of keepsakes. But in the case of memorial jewellery, sometimes using a digital image that you can email is the only option.

Live Impression fingerprint jewelry offers:

  • A direct connection to the original impression
  • Natural depth and contour
  • A truly one-of-a-kind result
  • The physical shape created by the touch of the finger
  • Engraved fingerprint jewelry offers:
  • The ability to work from photographs and digital images
  • The option to choose different shapes on which to add the fingerprint
  • More design flexibility
  • Deeper, more dramatic fingerprint lines
  • Greater visual clarity

Many customers choose cast fingerprint jewelry because they value the fact that the finished piece originates from an impression made by their loved one. They can physically connect to something their loved one touched.

Others prefer engraved fingerprint jewelry because they want a stronger visual representation of the fingerprint itself.

Both approaches create meaningful keepsakes designed to preserve memories and celebrate important connections.

Can an Existing Cast Fingerprint Pendant Be Engraved?

In some cases, yes.

If you have a digital image of the fingerprint, it may be possible to engrave the fingerprint onto an existing cast pendant, combining the physical impression with a more detailed engraved fingerprint image. However, the digital fingerprint will not be a match to the fingerprint impression. Essentially we will have to layer the digital print directly over the organic print, and they may not be a match.

If you would like to explore this option, please contact us and we would be happy to discuss the possibilities.

Still Not Sure?

Many customers choose cast fingerprint jewelry because they love knowing the piece was created from the actual impression made by their loved one.

Others choose engraved fingerprint jewelry because it is the option available for a digital image, but they still want a more natural looking pendant.

Both methods create meaningful keepsakes. The difference is what type of print is available to you. If both options are available, you can decide whether you value the physical impression itself and are fine with the personal involvement required to create it, or if you prefer the simplicity of emailing an image and the visual appearance of the fingerprint and pendant shape most.
